Former US Ambassador Frank Ruddy addresses American University students on Western Sahara

“The question of who is entitled to be in control of the Western Sahara went before the world court in 1975, and the Court issued an opinion saying that although there were historical ties between Morocco and certain parts of the Western Sahara…there was no right of Morocco to be the sovereign power in the Western Sahara,” he insisted. “The Court recommended that the referendum that Spain had planned…should go forward, and the people should decide for themselves whether to be free or whether to be part of Morocco….I invite you all to read that opinion, and if there’s any doubt at all about what that opinion says about this case, I would be very surprised.”
